Want to enjoy a summer cocktail without worrying about how many calories or how much sugar is in it? Having a drink should be a relaxing experience shared with friends, family or loved ones, without guilt or shame. And wouldn’t it also be nice NOT to have to pay the price the next day with a headache, bloating, puffinesss and cravings for junk?
Sugar and gluten are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to that. If you are sensitive to gluten or have celiac’s disease or any autoimmune disease for that matter, beer and grain based alcohols are no longer an option. But tequila is a great choice for gluten free drinkers (as is wine).
Unfortunately though, margaritas are typically very high in sugar. For example, if you use a sweet and sour mix to make your margarita, it will have close to 20 grams of sugars in only 1/4 cup of the mix, or more depending on the brand. Store bought mixes also contain a complex list of ingredients including high fructose corn syrup, food colorings, sugar, corn starch, cellulose gum, and preservatives such as hexametaphosphate, polysorbate 60 and sodium metabisulfite.
Make you want to think again about using Mrs T’s mix?
It’s a little more work, but totally worth it to make your own. Believe it or not, it will taste better and is much healthier! Here’s an extremely refreshing and tasty margarita recipe (the fresh squeezed lime juice will really will make a difference in taste, so if you want the best flavor don’t take any short cuts):
Clean Lean and Sexy™ Margarita
1.5 oz Patrón tequila
2 fresh whole limes, juiced
1/4 cup of water
5 -7 drops liquid stevia or 1/2 teaspoon of agave (optional)
coarse sea salt or kosher salt
Place tequila, lime juice, water, ice and stevia in a cocktail shaker. Shake well until cold and mixed. Place salt on a plate. Wet the rim of your margarita glass and dip it into the plate of salt. Serve with ice or strain drink into glass without ice. Cheers!
