That is before becoming a mom…before I knew what “clean” eating was, when I ate whatever I wanted, when I was oblivious to the inflammatory role of foods like sugar and delayed food allergies…AND when snacks were my lunch. Pretzels to be exact, usually, the thick, hard, twist pretzels. They had a dense, gratifying crunch, making them a satisfying, almost lunch. With a diet coke, they hit the spot!
It was easy, cheap and saved time. Back then, I preferred to just work through lunch. A few years later, when I had kid and realized snacking wrecked their meals, I became more of a stickler for sitting down and eating breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Fast forward to today, specifically the past few months, with more travel, meetings and working with our team, I find myself needing a snack late morning to hold me over until lunch. Or, if my lunch sucks, then I crave a snack late in the afternoon.
So, I’m in a new space, once again.
This time, it’s about wanting convenient healthy snacks. But snacks in a wrapper or bag aren’t always what they appear to be, leaving me frustrated with how few options I can eat or confidently recommend to my clients. Raw nuts, a piece of fruit, or some veggies and hummus are super snacks. But what if they aren’t handy or you simply can’t bring yourself to eat one more raw cashew or almond?
To most, bars seem like an ideal choice with their carefully crafted and colorful promises of protein, fiber, whole grains…..seemingly a healthy option.
Then, why is it that with every bar I pick up and read the wrapper, I think, why do they do that?!? Some things are obvious like the long list of freakish ingredients, soy, sugar, or heavily processed forms of protein. Then, there’s the less obvious like inulin, a unsuspecting ingredient. Yes it’s fiber, but the kind of fiber that reeks havoc on digestion, whether hidden or obvious with farting and bloating.
And if you want a bar without grains, it’s nearly impossible to find one.
Until now! I am thrilled to announce the all new Clean Lean and Sexy™ whole food energy bar. It’s a no grainer!!! Really, I am SO excited about this bar, I could scream (to use the words of one of my clients).
When I met with the manufacturer to discuss the recipe, I had serious worries over how we could take something I make in my kitchen and turn it into a simple, fresh, good tasting bar that’s mass produced in a manufacturing facility, then stuffed in a wrapper for later consumption. Well, we did it! YAY! When he told me he wanted to use honey as a stabilizer and anti-microbial agent as well as sweetener, I wanted to jump up and down with joy. Honey is my favorite natural sweetener. Read about honey here
We came up with a combination of almond butter, nuts, honey, coconut and small amount of fruit. I love the ingredients, and yet my team tells me it’s more about what’s not in the bars rather than what’s in them! With their crunchy, but at the same time, smooth texture, they are deliciously satisfying. I’m tellin’ you, your sweet tooth is gonna love these! They satisfy cravings for sweets without adding the residual guilt or crash in energy. My clients love them too, and I’m already thinking of new flavors to add to the product line! We are getting rave reviews – check out the latest online review in Downtown Magazine NYC.
